What to Know About Trump’s Reclassification of Medical Marijuana

On April 23, acting U.S. attorney general Todd Blanche signed an order changing the federal classification of medical marijuana. The move, which came at the behest of President Donald Trump and will make the substance a Schedule 3 drug, will bring enormous tax benefits to medical marijuana producers in the 40 states where medical use is legal and may speed research into its effects, experts say.
But it does not legalize marijuana at the federal level, nor does it change the status of marijuana grown for recreational use.

Trump signs executive order expediting marijuana reclassification

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday to expedite the reclassification of marijuana – an effort to increase research on its medical use but not fully legalize it.
The order — which directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to hasten the process of loosening federal restrictions but does not include a timeline — comes after an intensive lobbying campaign from the cannabis industry.

A Michigan judge has ruled a massive new tax on wholesale cannabis purchases can stand for now after the industry challenged the law.
A decision came Monday, weeks after the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association filed a suit against the 24% tax, which was part of the state's new budget it passed in November.

Smoking marijuana purchased in Michigan could be illegal soon in Ohio

Northwest Ohio residents have made the trek into Michigan for years to buy recreational marijuana.
But soon, it could be illegal in Ohio to have or smoke marijuana that wasn’t legally grown in the state.
If enacted, Ohioans will only be allowed to possess and use marijuana legally grown or purchased in Ohio. The bill says marijuana purchased from other states, including Michigan, will be be treated as contraband.

Gretchen Whitmer Signs Michigan Marijuana Tax into Law

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a new 24% tax on marijuana sales between producers and dispensaries, saying the measure will help fund her administration’s long-promised effort to repair the state’s crumbling roads.
The tax, which applies to wholesale marijuana transactions, is expected to generate roughly $420 million annually — money that will go toward Whitmer’s $1.8 billion road-funding plan.

Michigan court rules marijuana dealers can face harsher sentences than illegal growers

People committing similar large-scale marijuana crimes face very different penalties in Michigan.
Dealers are eligible to serve up to 15 years in prison, while illegal growers of any size may only be charged with a misdemeanor, the state Court of Appeals clarified this week.
