New Michigan law targets ‘flushable’ wipes

Manufacturers are no longer allowed to market the wipes in Michigan as “flushable.” In fact, they are required to include the words “Do Not Flush” and a symbol dissuading people from sending the sturdy fabrics to sewage treatment plants.
The wipes are infamously known for clogging pumps, requiring constant maintenance and costly cleaning expenses.

Amazon Prime Day is a big event for scammers

In updated guidance published last week, the Better Business Bureau reminded consumers to watch out for lookalike websites, too-good-to-be-true social media ads, and unsolicited emails or calls during sales events this month.

New Michigan law requires HOAs to allow rooftop solar

People who want to install solar panels on their roofs have to consider a lot: sunlight, cost, and coordinating with contractors and utilities.
Tens of millions of people across the country also have to think about their homeowners association.
In Michigan, a new law aims to remove that barrier by telling those associations they have to allow rooftop solar.
The Homeowners’ Energy Policy Act was signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday.

Michigan Senate committee moves prefab homes bill to floor

July 8, 2024

A package of Senate Bills 486-490 could address this by overhauling Michigan’s mobile home park law for the first time since 1987. The bills cleared a hurdle last month when they passed through committee with an 8-3 vote and are now headed to the Senate for a vote
A similar set of bills was introduced three years ago but died in session after being OK’d by House. This time around the legislation is heading to a Senate vote after passing through committee.

The Uniform Power of Attorney Act

The Uniform Power of Attorney Act (“UPOAA”) was signed into law by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on November 7, 2023. It took effect on July 1, 2024, the UPOAA repeals and replaces the durable power of attorney provisions in the Estates and Protected Individuals Code (“EPIC”), MCL 700.5501-5505. Michigan now joins 30 other states and the District of Columbia in adopting a version of this unified framework.
In general, the UPOAA provides significantly more guidance on the procedures, powers and limitations applicable to financial powers of attorneys in Michigan. The UPOAA contains 47 separate statutes all relating to financial powers of attorney, whereas EPIC only contained five.

Michigan fireworks laws 2024: What’s allowed and where to catch a show

July 3, 2024
Every day through Friday of this week, Michiganders can set off fireworks between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. State law prohibits municipalities from banning fireworks during these times from June 29 to July 4, and the state law extends to July 5 if it falls on a Friday or Sunday.
Residents can use fireworks on private property but lighting them on public property including sidewalks, streets, at schools and churches is illegal. Violators can be fined up to $500.

US wants Boeing to plead guilty to fraud over fatal crashes, lawyers say

July 2, 2024
The U.S. Justice Department is pushing Boeing to plead guilty to criminal fraud in connection with two deadly plane crashes involving its 737 Max jetliners, according to several people who heard federal prosecutors detail a proposed offer Sunday.
Boeing will have until the end of the coming week to accept or reject the offer, which includes the giant aerospace company agreeing to an independent monitor who would oversee its compliance with anti-fraud laws, they said.

'NFL Sunday Ticket’ trial

The NFL has been found guilty of breaking antitrust laws in its distribution of out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on the “Sunday Ticket” premium subscription service.
Even though the jury of five men and three women in a U.S. District Court awarded nearly $4.8 billion in damages Thursday to residential and commercial subscribers of “Sunday Ticket,” don’t expect any settlement checks or the shuttering of the service anytime soon.
