Elon Musk’s Starlink charges Hurricane Helene survivors $400 for ‘free’ internet service

Elon Musk pledged to give victims of Hurricane Helene 30 days worth of free access to his satellite-based Starlink internet service — but the billionaire failed to mention that survivors of the disastrous storm that has claimed the lives of more than 200 people will need to fork over $400 for the system’s hardware. After 30 days, customers who qualify for free access will be automatically moved onto a $120-a-month subscription.

Michigan set to require eggs come from cage-free systems in 2025

Nearly all eggs sold in Michigan will need to come from cage-free birds starting in less than 3 months.
A law passed in 2019 requires all eggs sold in the state to come from chickens, ducks, and other foul that live in cage-free environments starting December 31, 2024.

About 17,000 people who were expecting to be on the registry for 25 years suddenly faced a lifetime sanction after lawmakers amended the law in 2011.

Veterinarian lost track of 41,000 pills

Federal prosecutors say Zylstra violated the Controlled Substances Act because he didn’t keep proper records, including marking down when drugs were brought in and conducting inventories. They say a Drug Enforcement Administration audit found some 41,000 opioid and benzodiazepine tablets were not accounted for.

J&J unit files for bankruptcy to advance US$10bil talc settlement
A Johnson & Johnson (J&J) subsidiary has filed for bankruptcy for a third time as the healthcare giant seeks to advance an approximately US$10bil proposed settlement that would end tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging that the company’s baby powder and other talc products caused cancer.
J&J faces lawsuits from more than 62,000 claimants who alleged that its baby powder and other talc products were contaminated with asbestos and caused ovarian and other cancers.
To stop those lawsuits, J&J subsidiary Red River Talc filed for bankruptcy protection in a federal bankruptcy court in Houston, last Friday.

High court affirms Michigan's plan to increase minimum wage

Michigan’s $10.33 hourly minimum wage should increase to $12.48 an hour on Feb. 21, the Michigan Supreme Court said in a Wednesday order that clarified the timeline for a phase-in of a $15 minimum wage.
The order came after the high court majority on July 31 ruled a strategy used to curb minimum wage and paid sick leave ballot initiatives was unconstitutional and that the minimum wage increase should be phased in starting Feb. 21, 2025.

US FBI disrupts second Chinese hacking group, director says

September 19, 2024
U.S. law enforcement has disrupted a second major Chinese hacking group nicknamed "Flax Typhoon" and wrested thousands of compromised devices from its grasp, FBI Director Christopher Wray said on Wednesday.
In an advisory also made public Wednesday, British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand cyber officials also accused the Integrity Technology Group of being behind the malicious cyber operation and said that, as of June, it had compromised more than 250,000 devices around the world.
